Who was Thoth?

In ancient Egyptian mythology, Thoth is god of wisdom and technology. Commonly represented as a man wearing an ibis mask, Thoth was revered as the inventor of mathematics, engineering, astronomy and botany. According to Plato's Phaedrus, Thoth also invented writing; he is frequently depicted as a scribe.

Thoth was the measurer of time and devised the solar year. The curved beak of his ibis mask was associated with the moon, and it was to Thoth that the ancient Egyptians ascribed their knowledge of the stars.
